James Comey ends 2017 with one final dig at Trump

Former FBI Director James Comey closed out 2017 with one last less-than-subtle dig at President Donald Trump.

Here’s hoping 2018 brings more ethical leadership, focused on the truth and lasting values, ” Comey tweeted at 6:46 pm on Sunday. “Happy New Year, everybody.”

Comey was rejected by Trump in May 2017, a move that triggered accusations of obstruction of justice and the nomination of Robert Mueller’s Special Counsel. Comey has since testified that Trump requested his loyalty at a private dinner in January and pressured him the following month to halt the investigation into Trump’s former national security advisor, Michael Flynn. President Trump has denied both asserts.

Comey has a long history of subtweeting the president. In reality, at times it seems like it’s the only reason he’s even on Twitter.

On Dec. 1, after Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his communications with Russia, Comey tweeted a poem from Bible, specifically Amos 5:24. “But justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

On Nov. 11, in response to belittling remarks made by the president, Comey dropped a massive subtweet in the form of a quotation from Rev. Charles Haddon Spurgeon. “If you crave truth to go round the world you must hire an express develop to draw it; but if you want a lie to go round the world, it will wing; it is light as a feather and a breath will carry it.”

And in late October, while he was still tweeting under the alias @projectexile7, Comey offered a cryptic remark to the news of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team charging three members of Donald Trump’s campaign.

As lately as Dec. 3, President Trump has dismissed Comey’s claims that he pressured him to stop investigating Michael Flynn as “fake news.”

Here’s hoping 2018 keeps the subtweets coming.
